The 40s is the time to upgrade and personalise your look. Most men can look their best in their 40s, it just takes a bit of effort – think Tom Hardy, or Barak Obama when he stepped into the Whitehouse or Daniel Craig as James Bond.

The first step is to assess your wardrobe – what is a keeper and what is fit for disposal? Take everything out and only put back the items that fit and flatter – do not keep items that you wore in your twenties as they will no longer suit you! Put everything else into four piles:- Throw away; Recycle to charity; Sell on-line; Needs alteration and/or repair.

Next, write a list of what is left, then write a list of what is missing. The important items that every man should have in his wardrobe are:-

At least one really smart suit (or a minimum of 5 suits if you wear one every day) – it should be fitted, rather than baggy as the slightly closer fit will flatter. You could add a waistcoat if you like to take off your jacket at work (think Gareth Southgate). We find most men in their 40s will have between 6 and 10 changes to the standard garment to ensure a perfect fit. The suit will see you through many occasions – formal and less formal it rarely looks out of place.

Well-cut wool trousers – if off-the-peg aren’t 100% perfect, don’t waste your money – buy better quality that is made-to-measure and be prepared to spend on good cloth (the cost per wear will often be lower than cheaper trousers) and they are so much more comfortable!

Chinos that fit properly – you can go colourful if it suits your personality.

A good quality jacket – can be thrown on with jeans, chinos or formal trousers to suit the occasion. We suggest you take advice from one of our team who will offer you versatile cloth to suit any occasion.

A dinner suit, or tuxedo. You can go for traditional black or choose midnight blue. If you spend a lot of time on the red carpet, you can go wild with colour and nowadays almost any colour is acceptable.

An overcoat – invest now and your coat will give you great service. A wool or cashmere is the best option and they can be dressed down with jeans at the weekend or thrown over a suit during the week.

Well-fitting shirts (some with cufflinks). At least 10 are needed for every day use and you may want to order some smart casual for the off-duty days – don’t do a David Cameron and just roll up the long sleeves to show how casual you are!

Avoid at all cost – obvious logos, gym wear away from the gym, trainers unless you are training, novelty cufflinks and novelty ties.

Finally, please invest in some leather shoes to finish your polished look.
